From my early adolescence through my late twenties, my life was shaped by loss—from the sudden death of my father at age thirteen to my mother's tortuous decline into Alzheimers a decade later. I use this space to reflect, to offer solace and empathy to others, and to broaden how we recognize the strength of our humanity.
What I've discovered: ice cream makes us smarter, so much so that I'm writing a book to explain how and why. Most importantly—and I readily admit I'm a slow learner—I best captured my thoughts in the spring of 2009, about a year and a half after my mother died, after trying to understand how she died. I started, however furtively, to have my own life back: Love, or why I couldn't finish Don Quixote.
